Recently I was asked to present at a career day at a neighborhood school...

After accepting the invite, I made a snazzy portfolio of my work on my new IPad I just received as a gift! I made postcards for my current work on exhibit, created a list of the top art schools, made a list of the top earners in my field [for the Republicans - ha-ha] and even had Rhode Island School of Design send summer school brochures for a summer program I attended when I was in High School.

then- I thought...Is being an artist a career choice? doesn't art pick you?

yes in the 15th 16th and 17th Centuries art could be a choice. Strict art concepts and rules were followed, apprenticeships were the norm, but now in this day and age, can it be chosen?

I didn't over analyze and just showed up with my handouts. I had to force the handouts but the I-pad portfolio was a big hit! A few students asked what IPad version it was. I had no clue.

My favorite part of the experience were the questions the kids asked, they really made me see the pros of the choice I made.

Using Russian painter and art theorist Vasily Kandinsky as an inspiration the third grade class at Slavens created this amazing piece of art. A cool palette was used to paint the well known circle. Your children pushed and pulled on that idea creating color plans and several sketches before a paint brush hit the canvas.

Obviously all the planning paid off. When the painting was in a gallery being framed a Denver musician tried to purchase it, we invited him to the auction of course.

Using Russian painter and art theorist Vasily Kandinsky as an inspiration the third grade class at Slavens created this amazing piece of art. A warm palette was used to paint the well known circle. The artists developed the concept, then added paint to canvas two times and finished by using gel pens to add some subtle details. I made up the curriculum myself, which morphed itself into a six week course.

The only thing we failed to do was create the fountain. Maybe I will meet someone who knows about pumps and fountains before I teach it again.

so, while finishing up with the Miami Beach show preparations and preparing for the Bell Gallery, February show, last week...
I had an idea...
Last spring, some elementary artists and I, made a piece of art for a charity auction. The theme? Hearts! lesson plan One of the parents at the school, Jeff Padrick, Klug Studio is a professional photographer and digitally photographed this artwork - gratis.
I took the disc and had a giclée print (definition) on canvas made [no framing costs!] and another one made on watercolor paper. They both looked amazing.
so..
I am going to have the prints available at my February show and donate all the profit to the school's art department.

I am so happy I actually accomplished these three painting commissions. I once heard a keynote speaker say "If you roll a nickle you get a dime in return". So I rolled out a nickle last spring, by donating a painting commission at a charity auction, and got ten bucks in return. The last twelve months have been insane, bad economy? where. I sold eight painting last week! and not at an art festival or show where multiple sales are normal.

I have to thank everyone for their patience as I am unsure of how to prioritize..who goes first?? Now I just have to finish a commission for a lady in SC and gentleman in Puerto Rico and for a difficult client who returned a painting for another but couldn't find anything so she wants me to repaint another commission [why didn't the creator give me that kind of backbone?].

I have so many ideas for paintings from these amazing mini artworks. This piece is a collaborative piece created by using three three inch watercolor paintings per student. As you can see the end result is a colorful & energetic composition that would lend itself to both a residential or commercial application.

This artwork is a collaborative effort using three small 3" x 3" paintings per student. The combination of all these smaller paintings form a larger entertaining composition. Students painted larger acrylic paintings on paper focusing on ten composition varieties. Later they added a metallic wash to their painting thus creating the unifying force between so many different artistic styles. Each artist then selected the three most interesting parts of their painting and donated them for this piece.

Warhol Hearts by: Tuesday Art Club

This fun collage was a collaborative effort between four Slavens students and an instructor. Warhol's concept never seems to grow old or boorish. It is fun to see how different artists put it to use. The third and second graders who made this piece plan on donating it to a charity auction to raise money for their school.

The Jersey Shore

well this is it, I have to finish my Jersey Shore painting this week. I am off to a Robert Burridge painting workshop [ http://www.robertburridge.com/ ] and won't give myself permission to attend until this is finished. As I said in an earlier blog; it has been hard painting a place I have never been to before. With the help of the Internet [ http://www.newjerseyshorelife.com/] and many other fun sights] I am getting close to finishing this painting. My friend Grace, assures me that I have to put an airplane with an ad for "happy hour" in the sky and that will complete the painting.

During the holidays I had the chance to hang out with friends and reminisce about the past year. Now wonder it has taken me so long to paint this painting.

My friend Kathy reminded me of the 65 foot long mural I painted for her company's 15 year Anniversary this fall [ http://www.portablecomputersystems.com/news-and-events/events.html ] in the background of the food table photo, you will see just half of the mural.

Then I was reminded of this little interruption :

Yes , I can now add a Big Bird costume to my resume. My oldest son and his crew decided to dress up as Elmo, Cookie Monster, Oscar the Grouch & Big Bird for Halloween. The only problem .... Big Bird isn't licensed and you cannot buy a Big Bird Costume. Therefore, I had to make one. Who knows maybe Sesame Street{ http://www.sesamestreet.org/onair/characters/big_bird } will buy my design??

This is my on going attempt to capture The Jersey Shore, where I have never been. I think I am struggling to finish because I have not been there and do not have the emotional sensation from having been there to amp the painting with feeling.

To think I thought painting a non-objective painting was harder than a representational one. Guess I was wrong, at least in this case.

This June I reunited with an old pilates instructor of mine Cher Aslor or pH7 Health & Fitness here in Denver. She exhibited my artwork this summer while I was working in South Carolina.

The opening reception was a blast and I met a former art critic for the Aspen Times newspaper. He did not have anything bad to say but he did mention that he was surprised the art was made by just one artist. Soy yo or me. This leads me into my “does an artist really have to have just one voice?” I’ll address this one day but out of time right now.

I had a one night , one woman show at Lulu's furniture and decor this March. I was hesitant to do a one night gig at first. It is a lot of work to put on a show for just one night. Boy was I wrong, I sold seven pieces and may have a possible commission from this show. Even better I connected with an old friend who is going to work for me this summer by helping me with the admin. part of being an artist.

The best part is that I made a new friend , Chris Brant , the owner of this store has great energy and supports artists by having them show at her store the third Thursday of the month.

This is a great idea to help promote Lulu's and the work of local artists.

I had two shows this spring. These images are from a group show I participated in this April at ditto Gallery in Denver Colorado. They specialize in high quality reproductions. Art 4 Aids

I was able to donate this collage to help Art 4 Aids . My new friend Kit Karbler solicited a piece after I solicited his help juroring the 11th annual Slavens Arts Festival. He is an amazing glass artist and I am glad he asked because I got to go to his Blake Street Glass Studio and watch him and his team work. But most importantly the friendship started because he bought one of my pieces. Its truely flattering when another artist buys your art.

This was a busy spring. I started out with donating a 4' x 4' blank canvas to Slavens School [a Denver Public School] to help raise money for their PTA. The couple that bid on the blank canvas was lovely to work with other than the size of the work and a few color ideas they let me have full reign over the project. They have a mid Century home [50's home] that is decorated true to that period so this painting looks amazing in the space.
